Hong Kong raises the Fintech Week bar

Fintech festivals – too many, too frequent! At some point in the near future, we will have to say – enough!

2017 might well be seen as the year when industry, governments, venture capital money and event organizers flood the markets with too many Fintech-focused festivities. Afterall, it’s nearly the same set of topics, the same set of speakers, and the same set of attendees (in each market).

So why keep hashing the same banana? MONEY! Just Q1 2017, KPMG pegs investments flowing into Fintech at US$3.2 billion across 260 deals. It might actually be slowing judging from the trend but its still big money.

Hong Kong might be setting a new high bar in terms of how much governments are willing to push the financial services industry on the Fintech brink. This year’s Hong Kong Fintech Week is not one week but three weeks rolled under one week (not sure if my Calculus is handling the Math right).

Week 1 called Hong Kong Fintech Week is from October 23-27 covers start-up funding to IPO, China Fintech, Blockchain and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, RegTech, InsurTech and WealthTech, plus Belt & Road.

Week 2 called Fintech and U (October 30 to November 3) focuses on Fintech in education and Hong Kong’s burgeoning Fintech talent pool.

Week 3 is actually just a 2-day (November 7-8) jam by FinovateAsia with the usual pitches and speeches from industry luminaries and wannabees.

Fintech Innovation will, of course, bring you some of the highlights from the event.

Wait for 2018, when Indonesia runs its own Fintech festival and conference. Nigeria will likely have a follow-up to its Fintech & AI Nigeria Forum held earlier on April 24, 2017. Over to Europe is the Webit Festival Europe slated for April 24-25, 2018.
