Second-factor authentication: A need or a want?

With online transactions becoming an inherent part of our lives, second-factor authentication (2FA) is more than just a need. Authentication is critical in the use of online services in sectors like banking and finance, or government and healthcare.

In 2005, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) was galvanized into issuing directives to encourage banks to adopt 2FA for Internet banking in order to deflect Cybercrime. From as early as 2003, there were reservations about the security of Single-Factor Personal Identification Numbers (PINs). It was clear back then that in an increasingly challenging security landscape, Single-Factor Authentication, such as a simple password protected login to access services or data was not an adequate measure.

How does Second-Factor Authentication help?

Second-Factor Authentication (2FA) reduces the inherent risk of losing valuable personal information by combining “what you know” such as a password PIN, with “what you have” such as a hardware e-token; or “who you are”, which is biometric data such as a fingerprint.

Users are required to not only enter their own passwords to prove their identities; they must also produce another source of identification that will continually authenticate with the company’s servers as well.
