To guard its more than 24 million subscribers in the country, South Korean telecom firm SK Telecom has started deployment of Fortinet's FortiGate-3950B network security appliance, which will secure its 3G and 4G LTE networks against outside intrusions.

SK Telecom needed to upgrade its legacy network security infrastructure to cope with the higher throughput and protection demand resulting from the increased traffic generated by its 3G and 4G LTE services as well as its subscribers’ broader use of smartphones and tablets. After conducting a benchmark test on various security appliances from major vendors, SK Telecom has selected Fortinet’s FortiGate-3950B solution for its unmatched performance, flexibility, feature-richness and ease of management.

SK Telecom has purchased FortiGate-3950B appliances for carrier-grade NAT service and for 10G firewall protection of its content server farm. With this implementation, the telco provider will be able to apply up to 10 million concurrent session firewall performance, SSL & IPSEC VPN, NAT/PAT, ALG-SIP, DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) and QoS features over its service at no additional cost. Moreover, SK Telecom will be able to offer greater stability in its services by preventing service delays caused by traffic overload and ensure high availability.

Fortinet’s FortiGate-3950B, an integrated network security appliance, combines high-performance hardware and a modular design to deliver up to 120 Gbps of firewall performance, the fastest firewall throughput available in any appliance form factor. Through the use of modular expansion capabilities and innovative FortiASIC™ processors, the FortiGate-3950B boasts the highest overall consolidated security performance among the FortiGate appliance line and wire-speed firewall performance at 10-GbE and GbE link speeds to ensure high throughput and low latency at minimum cost.

“The technology choice of SK Telecom further demonstrates that, through its groundbreaking security, performance and scalability, our FortiGate-3950B is a powerful solution for large enterprise customers,” said Patrice Perche, Senior Vice President of International Sales & Support at Fortinet. “With this customer success, Fortinet will continue to aggressively target the enterprise market and service providers at large, which all require rapid processing for massive Internet transaction volumes.”
