Hong Kong's Information Services Department has launched a free mobile app for the iPad, iPhone, Android tablets and Android phones that gives users a comprehensive view of the city.

The app is the digital version of Brand Hong Kong's (BrandHK) "This is Hong Kong" booklet. It has six chapters and includes 90 pictures and six videos of Hong Kong's development and lifestyle.

"It is structured around Hong Kong's key attributes, painting Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan, secure, dynamic and well-connected city," said Information Services Department Deputy Director Mary Leung.

"We also incorporated some videos about Hong Kong so those who have not visited Hong Kong before can actually have some images of Hong Kong, not just pictures and text," she added.

The app likewise features maps of Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and the MTR. The section is connected to Google Maps so users can easily identify their location.

Many government departments have launched mobile apps to better connect to the public. Examples include the Enjoy Hiking app of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department that showcases hiking trails, the Hong Kong Geopark and Hong Kong Wetlands Park; and News.gov.hk for the iPhone, iPad and Android versions.

"We monitor advancement in information technology closely and if a device is proved to be popular and mature, we will certainly consider using this tool as a popular vehicle," Leung said.
